The bridge will be 4.2 metres wide above the 1:20 flood level and wide enough for a vehicle to cross level. The construction commenced in May 2016 and is expected to be completed in before the new financial year. According to a Municipal Report, there has been a high demand for development in the area during the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) and Budget as well as Mayoral Imbizo roadshows. Speaking to the Metro’s Website, Ward Councillor Mashwabada Gcilishe said that the Metro heard the cries of the residents of Ward 11 and “due to lack of development in the area, the bridge is a step forward in delivering services to the people of Mdantsane.” “Due to an outcry from the community, we had to build a structure which will span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, for the purpose of providing proper thoroughfare for the residents of NU5 and NU 6,” said Gcilishe. He added that the road had a high rate of fatal accidents due to poor road conditions. Gcilishe also mentioned that a number of job opportunities were opened to the people of Ward 11 during the construction of the bridge. 2016 Standard Bank Ironman 70.3 Triathlon Road Closure Road Closures: 00h00 – 17h00 · Esplanade Road between George Walker Parade and Moore Street. · Buffalo Park Drive between John Bailie Road and Fitzpatrick Road. · John Bailie Road between Ainsdale Road and Moore Street including Mc Jannet Drive. Beacon Bay to Gonubie link road launched The construction follows an appeal that was made by the Buffalo City Development Planning division that there is a need for a road to link Beacon Bay and Gonubie, while simultaneously opening up areas of under utilised land for development. The Metro has set aside 70 million for the second phase of the project which the Mayor said will open up more land for urban development. The Mayor added that investors had already pumped in money for private development. Speaking about the projects, General Manager for Engineering Services Luyanda Mbula said, “The funding constraints had caused the first phase to be divided in two but phase 2 will be more complex as it will include the building of bridges.” “With just phase 1, we have witnessed alleviation of traffic congestion with motorists who want to go to the mall or join the N2 freeway having several options to use,” said Mbula. “Once we are done with phase 2, we will promptly deal with phase 3 and 4 such that we can start with the construction of yet another route. Phase 2 will be completed end February 2019,” he said. “There will be seven phases in total and in completion of all seven planned phases the Link Road will run from the robots at Retail Park and Eskom’s Head Office, all the way to connect to the Gonubie Main Road, just past the Gonubie Police Station,” he added. Adding to that, Project Director Andre Naude said they would hire 20 people but the number will double at the height of construction activity and a number of SMME’s will be subcontracted for construction of the portion of the works. The City officials also visited two other project sites that the Metro is currently implementing which include the completed Reigerton Park Main Road upgrade and the Fleet Street which is still under construction and is scheduled for completion by December 2017.
