BUFFALO CITY, THE CITY OF LITERATURE CELEBRATES LOVE FOR READING
SA Library week is 18-24 March this year, but as a UNISECO Creative City of Literature, the Buffalo City Metro hosted a run-up event at Gompo Library this week.

The initiative geared towards youth and adults was meant to celebrate the love of reading, language, and literacy.

Eastern Cape Department of Arts & Culture Acting Distric Director Yandiswa Sodada said the purpose of such programmes was to promote the utilization of libraries.

"We know that the world is technologically advanced. People read e-books and use Google for research."

"But we want our young people to know that libraries are still a fountain of information," said Sodada.

"We also want to promote the languages of our province, in line with the Use of Language Act, 2012 (Act No. 12 of 2012). Where we encourage multilingualism in our children from a very young age," she added.

The programme included a spelling bee competition, book reviews, and reading aloud in both English and IsiXhosa.

Schools which were participating in the competition include Ebenezer Majombozi High School, Saandisiwe High School, Eric Mntonga High School, Lumko High School, Kusile High School and Sinovuyo High School to mention a few.
