GOVERNMENT EMPOWERING YOUNG PEOPLE THROUGH TECHNOLOGY
Buffalo City Metro Municipality Executive Mayor Princess Faku together with Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mr. Mondli Gungubele Deputy Minister of Communications & Digital Technologies, Hon. Philly Mapulane, last week launched the Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors Programme in the City.

The launch is a partnership with National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA). The programme is aimed at empowering and upscaling communities on basic digital literacies, is part of the department’s mandate to bridge the digital divide through a concerted programme of skilling South Africans in the use of new digital technologies, and to draw more young people into the economy by addressing the digital skills deficit.

The first leg of the programe began with a visit to the Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Potsdam campus to visit the NEMISA Colabs which they use for skills training and development in collaboration with universities in the City. The work done by the students at the university include cellphone repairing. The second leg of the program took place at the East London Cit Hall where the official launch took place.

Addressing the crowd at the launch Mayor Faku said, “The birth of the Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors programme is therefore a direct response to dealing with the upskilling of young people for a much more digitalised economy. Schools who were part of the program include Ulwazi High and Richard Varha High School.
