Promising future for BCMM Mayoral Bursary beneficiaries
“I had almost given up on the idea of furthering my studies but with my grandmother’s prayers and hard work and the BCMM Bursary fund I get to follow my dream of studying Mechanical Engineering.”

These are the words of 18- year old Akha Witvoet from Ndevana Location who was raised by his grandmother after losing his mother when he was eight months old.

Looking at the situation at home, living off their grandmother’s pension fund, Witvoet and his three siblings who are unemployed.

Witvoet who will be pursuing a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology is one of the 25 beneficiaries of the Mayoral Bursary Fund this year. The Bursary Fund is intended to assist current or prospective students and shall be used towards covering tuition and registration fees, prescribed books, study material and accommodation.

Akha’s grandmother Grace Witvoet (73) said: “I am so happy that Akha has the bursary it’s my lifelong dream to see him study further and graduate become an engineer. I pray he never forgets where he comes from and the values of life I taught him.”

Motivating the recipients, the Executive Mayor Xola Pakati said: “We want to urge you to stay focused as you did during your matric year and ensure that you succeed in your studies.”

The bursaries are handed over to 25 new students and 37 continuing students for the 2020 academic year. A total of 62 students will be benefiting this year.
