CHANGING LIVES: 139 HOUSES HANDED OVER IN BREIDBACH
Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Human Settlements, Siphokazi Lusithi together with Executive Mayor for Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality Councillor Princess Faku officially handed 139 houses in Breidbach today, 15 February 2024.

The main purpose of the handover was to restore the dignity of the most vulnerable... the low-income earners and unemployed by providing them with decent quality houses.

This Human Settlements development entails the construction of 531 housing units for the benefit of the destitute families of BCMM.

74-year-old Maureen Pharo, who is one of the beneficiaries said: “I am very pleased that BCM gave me this house and I also appreciate the furniture and goods inside the house."

“I appreciate it a lot and to BCM and Human Settlements, I’d like to say thank you very much for giving me all this," said Pharo.

Giving her welcoming address at the handover, BCMM Executive Mayor Princess Faku said: "The story of Breidbach is one of resilience, of a community dedicated to bettering the lives of its residents. It is a story of unity in the face of adversity, of a community committed to fighting crime and ensuring that our children have access to education."

"It is a story of determination, as this community strives to engage in small-scale farming and gardening to provide for their families. A story of Reconstruction and Development. However, like many communities, Breidbach faces its share of challenges, including crime, unemployment, and gender-based violence. But we are determined to address these challenges head-on by creating an ecosystem that promotes economic opportunities and access to basic services, such as water, sewer reticulation, roads, stormwater, and electrification", added Faku.

"As we embark on this journey of building Breidbach community, let us draw strength from the words of Philippians 4:13, which reminds us that through faith, we can overcome any obstacle. This project has created 200 job opportunities but has also provided training to our people, empowering them with the skills needed to thrive in today's economy," she said.
