Outdoor gym for BCM communities on the cards

The Buffalo City Metro three regions, coastal, midland and inland, will soon have outdoor gym parks for everyone to keep fit and live a healthy lifestyle.

Outdoor gyms have been a growing trend in South Africa and the City will be part of that growing movement.

This comes after the City and the National Department of Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 7th of September 2020 for the installation of outdoor gymnasium.

The initiative is one of the programmes by the SRSA to roll-out outdoor gyms throughout the country in order to achieve healthy living and healthy lifestyle.

The agreement between the two parties makes the City one of the municipalities identified to benefit from the national project in the 2020/21 financial year.

BCM will be responsible for the identification of suitable land zoned for recreation purposes in a previously disadvantaged area for the installation of outdoor gym as well as the fencing of the area.

In the current financial year (2019/20) there are three outdoor gyms to be constructed in Sweetwaters, Breidbach and Dimbaza Community Parks (Inland).

In Bhisho, the gym will be installed at the Bhisho Central park as it is at the centre of the Bhisho area and it has ample space for the proposed development.

During the 2018/19 financial year, the Metro installed outdoor gym equipment at James Pearce (Coastal) and Mdantsane Highway Eco Park (Midlands).
